Santander, the spanish bank which for years has had its headquarters in the capital of Piedmont, continues to focus on Torino city and changes its location. The new headquarters have a long history behind, the building hosted for years the training center for the managers of the Fiat car company.

The new headquarters of the Santander Group have an extension of  about 7000 square meters and have been realized preserving the historical façade protected by the Belle Arti Foundation. Over 400 employees work here, the largest part of the bank’s Italian staff (around 750 people work there).

«The spaces – explains Guido Piacenza, human resources responsible? Manager of Santander Consumer Bank – have been organized on a human scale: ergonomic workstations using materials and warm tones, large open spaces, co-working areas and meeting rooms. We have also provided a refreshment area for our colleagues, equipped with about 50 seats for the consumption of meals, so as to facilitate them as much as possible in the work-life balance.»


The attention for its employees and the support in their  professional development have not gone unnoticed: Santander Consumer Bank has been certified as Top Employers Italy 2018, a prestigious award given every year by the Top Employers Institute to companies with excellent work environments and advanced policies of Human Resources Management.


Nesite was chosen for the supply and installation of the entire flooring: over 6000 square meters of raised floor with MPL structure (structure with interlocking system that significantly reduces the installation time) and high density calcium sulphate panels.

The ceramic is the optimal upper covering in this kind of environment with a sustained traffic thanks to its high resistance to abrasion and wear.



Abu Dhabi's Louvre

Nesite raised floor for the Louvre of Abu Dhabi

After many years of hard work, the museum Louvre in Abu Dhabi will open its doors.

Designed  by Pritzker prize winner Jean Nouvel, the museum was born following an intergovernmental agreement with France and it will exhibit artworks from all over the World.

Jean Nouvel was inspired by the special features of the Saadiyat site: a virgin lagoon island, between sand and sea, shade and light. His design will offer future visitors a high-impact architectural and museum experience that fosters dialogue between cultures.

The peculiarity of this prestigious work is the silver dome, which measures 180 meters and is made up of nearly 8000 metallic stars embedded in a complex geometric pattern which creates a spetacular “light rain” effect when it is lit by the sun.

Nesite contributed to the completion of the project by installing over 20.000 sqm of highly customized raised access floor, certified as anti–seismic. 

This is a project of enormous complexity, with highly customized product that also includes the Leed certification.

We have produced panels with special dimensions, for the most part 1400×233 mm, with calcium sulphate core 38 mm thick and upper covering in different types of natural marbles, applying a 3 mm bronzed brass edge trim specifically designed to meet the customer’s request.

For this project, we have produced and installed the following:

  • Our Tetris floor with tongue & groove system, calcium sulphate core at high density 32 mm thick and MPL stringers.
  • Customized panels with calcium sulphate core, 38 mm thick, galvanized steel tray 1 mm thick and various finishes in natural stone, with perimeter in bronze brass 3 mm thick, special dimensions 1400×233 mm.
  • Heavy duty substructure, with stringers 50x50x2 mm and special metal mesh 70×70 cm.

We have already told you about BREEM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method), the first and most widespread environmental evaluation protocol in the world.

A BREEAM “class A” certification represents the best evaluation of a building’s environmental performance.

We are proud to present you a building of the Fredriksborg Property, which have always been ecofriendly oriented with their projects: the Wilberg Atrium.


The construction was certified as BREEAM Very Good and energy Class A mainly because almost all the building is equipped with Raised Floor from Nesite and a UFAD System supplied by GBT Concept. UFAD means an Under Floor Air Distribution System where all installations (ventilation, air conditioning plus water, electricity and computer cabling) are under the Nesite raised floor, which cover almost all the flooring area.

This system has resulted in enormous energy savings, Now after one year of running it shows that the building is performing even lower than energy Class A.


Space heating (in Norway!) is guaranteed with the perfect comfort; indeed, it was used only 50% of energy normally needed for ventilation and 20% of energy normally used for cooling compared to standard installations using ducts and chilled beams installed in the ceiling. The reason for the savings is easily understood: the warm air raisesnaturally; by using the raised floor as a giant duct letting the conditioned air out into the ambient at low speed just above the floor the air raises to the ceiling by natural vertical motionsfollowing the most basic laws of physics, and saving energy.


The advantage in performance guaranteed by Nesite High Quality floor, a must for an air tight duct, in collaboration with GBT Concept is extremely evident also in case of inspection and maintenance of the systems: simple gestures give access, in maximum security, to installations normally difficult to inspect if installed in the ceiling. The Nesite raised floor together with GBT Concept System also is an important factor to the flexibility of the office space at Wilberg Atrium, permitting Facility Management at a significant lower cost than normal.

From the very beginning the owners of Wilberg Atrium aimed to save as much energy as possible, maintaining a high indoor air quality, and the team of engineers and architects together with Nesite and GBT Concept has reached this goal. 



“Element of Architecture”: between tradition and innovation

We have already spoken of “Fundamentals”, the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale, cared by the Dutch archi-star Rem Koolhaas, that a few weeks after opening, is proving a big success with critics and audiences.

Today we want to focus on what happens at the Central Pavilion in the Giardini, right in the heart of the exhibition.

Here there is “Elements of Architecture”, where the curator with a brave choice – it would have been much easier to dedicate the main area to the big projects or civil society issues – has collected all those elements that are not always valued, but they represent the base and the daily work of any architect: doors, ceilings, walls, windows, stairs, corridors, balconies, bathrooms, etc..

And, of course, the floor.

We then move into the “Floor Room” where the raised floor Nesite was installed.

As in the other rooms of the exhibition, also here the visitor is immersed in an intriguing mix of ancient and contemporary, artistic ambitions and common tools, tradition and innovation.

The floor is sometimes considered just a flat slab on which to walk, here, instead, it becomes the foundation on which to build and enhance fragments of history, like a Venetian mosaic or an Afghan prayer rug, or some Uzbek tiles. It feels like being inside a song by an eccentric singer and instead we are in the place where all the experts and enthusiasts come together to understand the directions of world architecture.

The “Floor Room” was entirely paved with raised covered with anti-static vinyl, one of the most popular materials used for equipment rooms and offices, where the raised floor is normally used.

Only a small area of ​​the room is rather devoid of panels, allowing the visitor to discover what lies beneath our floor! The perfect design of the system, integrated with the galvanized steel structure complete with stringers, gives stability to the whole, but allows maximum flexibility of the space redesign according to the new requirements.

And who said that a floor have to be an anonymous floor surface and cannot be fun? In this room children, but also (especially?) adults, do not resist the temptation to try Energy Floors, a small dance area capable of generating energy.

But a few inches back from this small play area you can find again Nesite floor, even in its glass version, ideal to show the original floor or to give prestige to any room.

The Biennale is the place where past and present come together to provide ideas and suggestions for the future. Nesite is proud to be present, but, above all, is ready to meet this challenge.

Completed the first installation of the radiant system by Nesite

The radiant raised floor Nesite, developed together with Floortech, was installed for the first time in a residential project .

It was done in a detached house in Asti, Piemonte, and looked after by the architect Paolo Ostino. The building is developed on staggered indoor levels, so that the floors can follow the natural slope of the intervention lot.

We asked the architect to tell us about his project and the reasons for this choice.

  ” During the design phase ,”  says architect Ostino “we wanted to give the utmost importance to the issues related to the spaces’ livability, energy saving and the auditing of maintenance costs generated from the building in its life, studying in detail each constructive aspect.”

” As regards the indoor floor system”, continues arch. Ostino “the choice was oriented to the solution of the radiant raised floor Nesite, the element that has combined at the best the three aspects of design research:

- The spaces’ livability: the color range of Nesite flooring was welcomed by the demands of the construction management and by the taste of the client, thereby allowing the creation of the designed spaces;

- The energy saving: the metal structure supporting the raised floor and radiant panels gave the opportunity to take advantage of the space, traditionally occupied by the cementitious substrate, for the passage of pipe plant, as well as to lay the necessary layer of insulating material, notably reducing the thickness of the elements’ stratigraphy and the schedule for completing the work phase

- Maintenance costs : the system adopted allows the inspection of the pavement at any point and in any stretch of the radiant panel, allowing any future modifications to the plant, thus eliminating the costs for construction intervention.”

Nesite installed for this project :

- About 200 sqm of Twin Floor with porcelain stoneware with a variety of finishes;

- Radiant panels embedded in the pavement, while allowing complete accessibility and flexibility;

- Special structure with double head to accommodate the radiant system and MPL stringers;

- Soundproofing acoustic supports, with dynamic stiffness higher than 10MN/m3 according to UNI EN 29052-2 , in eco-friendly rubber, to increase the acoustic comfort.

The raised floor: maintenance and care

The raised floor is a technical system made up of removable elements that requires a few simple rules for maintenance.

So here are some tips to keep in mind to preserve the stability of the system:

  • Always use lift trucks to move heavy loads, inserting between the panels and the wheels of a rigid body (for example, wood planks ) for proper load distribution .
  • If you’re operating on a raised floor with a transverse structures (where the tightness is guaranteed by the seal of the subfloor ), you must pay special attention not to damage or remove seals of the columns and crossbars: in this specific case, if this happens, you need to assess whether it is appropriate to provide for their replacement.
  • In case you need to remove and the posing of the raised floor that must be compulsorily using the appropriate tools for lifting, in any way, avoiding the use of mechanical means to make a lever between the panels .
  • To replace the panels that make up the raised floor , it is recommended to perform the procedure with the utmost care , exerting a slight pressure, but at the same time ensuring that the neighboring panels are placed in the correct way .
  • It should be particularly scrupulous in case you are performing maintenance on a raised floor that includes accessories, not to damage the connections.
  • If maintenance involves cutting or drilling panels with accessories, you should keep a distance from the edge of the panel, to ensure the strength of the concentrated load: You should not make cuts less than 10 cm from the edges and use the equipment most suitable depending on the type of panel.

Recall, finally, that the raised floor must be installed in a dry and protected space, at a temperature between 5 ° C and 35 ° C and relative humidity between 40% and 75%.

One of the basic requirements for raised floor is the fire resistance.

The European reference standard for the classification of fire resistance for raised floors is EN 13501-2.

In general, fire behavior corresponds to those  physical and chemical changes resulting from the exposure of a material or a building to fire.

The fire resistance, in particular, is the capability of a building or a part of it to maintain for a given time the following characteristics:

• Structural stability (R)

• Integrity  (E)

• Thermal insulation (I)

The structural stability is the capability of the construction or the construction element to maintain the mechanical resistance under the action of fire (R).

The integrity (or tightness) is the ability, when the structure or its element is subjected to fire on one side, not to let pass neither produce flames, hot gases or vapors on the unexposed side (E).

The thermal insulation is the ability to reduce the transmission of heat (I).

The tests and certificates that are valid for the Fire Department call for the contemporaneity of the three elements (REI) .

Fire resistance – Nesite raised floors

The number following the abbreviation (e.g. 15, 30) indicates the class of fire resistance, and corresponds to the minutes during which the fire resistance must be guaranteed.

The new European standard EN 13501-2, reduces the classification to a maximum of REI 30 for escape routes (e.g. corridors and lift landings), while for the offices also REI 15 is accepted.

The tests, in practice, are realized in a furnace by simulating a fire in the subfloor: while increasing the temperature (according to the normalized curve C), the average heat degree on the surface of the panels is measured; when it exceeds 150°C, the minutes elapsed since the furnace had been switched on are counted, provided that the stability and integrity are maintained. The European standard also calls for the presence of a load of 55 kg on each floor panel during the test.

Nesite raised floors, both in chipboard and calcium sulphate, are certified according to EN 13501-2 and meet the requirements of fire resistance required by the standard.

A new series of events related to the theme of the raised access floor starts from today’s post.  The purpose is to get the readers of our blog closer to a product perhaps little known in its complexity and characteristics. What is raised access floor?

Raised access floor, also called “floating floor” or “false floor”, is a system created to meet the technological needs of technical rooms and allow easy accessibility and maintenance of infrastructure cabling system.

Thanks to continuous technological developments, the use of the raised floor has become increasingly popular making this product an indispensable element for modern buildings and in particular for the open spaces: actually, one of the main purposes of the use of raised floor is to provide flexible and easily adaptable to changes work places.

The raised floor also offers the designer – architect great freedom in the design phase, thanks to the various types of panels and covering materials; at the same time it must meet the requirements of specific regulations, such as resistance and reaction to fire, the mechanical characteristics (concentrated and distributed loads), electrical properties (conductive, antistatic), acoustic  and, not least, anti-seismic characteristics.

 The Panels           

The modular panels are composed of 4 main elements: core, the bottom surface, the top covering and the edge-band.

The core of the panel may be chipboard, calcium sulphate or other inert material; the core determines the performance of the system in relation to the fire, mechanical resistance and acoustic insulation.

The bottom surface is made of aluminum or steel, and has the main function of protecting the panel, but can also be decisive for some performances (eg. the aluminum improves the fire resistance, the steel, instead, increases the mechanical resistance).

The top covering is the “visible” part of the raised floor, therefore it mainly has to comply with the aesthetic choice of the customer, to whom are offered a wide range of finishes: from the cheapest, such as plastic laminates and homogeneous resilient top coverings, to the finest ones, such as ceramics, wood, marble and granite, which are the heart of the range Nesite.

The edge-band serves to protect the panel during installation and handling and represents an added value to the system as it is anti-squeaking and self-extinguishing.

The structures          

The system of raised floor is completed by the support structure available in different configurations depending on the height and the loads to be fulfilled: from the most simple without stringers, of the MP (Multi Purpose) family,  or the ones with different stringers depending on the required mechanical resistance, up to the BPC system with heavy stringers for the maximum performances.
