Home / Projects / Commercial / NATIONAL LIBRARY OF ISRAEL

Nesite raised floor solutions in one of the largest and most spectacular libraries in the Middle East. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the National Library of Israel covers an area of 46,000 square metres distributed over 11 floors – 5 of which are underground – and hosts more than four million works including books, historical newspapers, photographs, personal collections and artefacts.

THE PROJECT

The National Library of Israel, located among the nation’s most important institutions, including the Museum of Israel and the Knesset, is a project of extraordinary symbolic and cultural value, perfectly integrated into the surrounding natural and architectural scenery.

The new home of Israel’s written heritage, completed and inaugurated in 2023, carries the signature of the prestigious Herzog & de Meuron studio, which has enclosed millions of works in a magnificent monolith inspired by the architecture of the place, built with massive limestone walls perforated to let light filter through. The interior, on the other hand, surprises the visitor with a spectacular view, created by the spiral of books developed on several floors around a large central skylight.

In a perfect balance between new and ancient, the library has been supplemented by modern elements such as automatic systems for organising and distributing books and numerous multimedia installations. The building also houses a 480-seat auditorium, an exhibition hall with rare exhibits, and various food and beverage areas.

The project was realised in cooperation with Mann – Shinar Architects.

WHY THE RAISED FLOOR

The National Library of Israel was developed using the Tetris Floor system, the tongue and groove raised floor that gives uniformity and high resistance to the surface, with a distinct advantage in terms of installation time.

The walking surface, immediately usable, has been combined with a loose-lay finishing and allows partial accessibility to the subfloor at predetermined points through access flaps.

Finally, the structures used are of various types according to the different load capacities required by the project, with heights ranging from 55 to 85 cm.
