Nesite raised floors in the urban regeneration of MIND with Horizon 4.1, an architectural structure that is part of the Westgate complex’s “To Work” system, which combines functional flexibility and conscious materiality with a deep connection to the urban and natural context.
THE PROJECT
Owned by Arexpo/Lendlease and designed by PIUARCH, in collaboration with Waugh Thistleton Architects and AIACE, Horizon 4.1 is one of the most significant pieces of the MIND – Milano Innovation District business area.
The architecture promotes the concept of Common Ground — a collective space that dissolves the boundary between inside and outside, generating urban continuity, visual permeability and fluidity in the pathways. It is a space that encourages interaction, hence the sequence of interior spaces — lobby, Retail & Welcome, coworking and conference centre — configured as a dynamic ecosystem capable of stimulating aggregation, collaboration and shared innovation.
From a functional point of view, the layout favours reconfigurable and modular environments, a strategic factor that responds to the need for adaptability required by a constantly changing working environment.
Horizon 4.1 also adheres to the highest international sustainability standards, adopting in particular the DfMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly) method, which standardises components and construction flows to optimise time, costs and material circularity.
The structure of the building consists of two reinforced concrete cores (structural cores) that resist horizontal and vertical forces, while the rest of the building is made of laminated timber (glulam) and XLAM panels for columns, beams and floors. This technological choice significantly reduces the embodied carbon footprint, speeding up prefabricated assembly and facilitating dismantling and reuse during decommissioning.
Horizon 4.1 will be LEED Gold & Platinum, WELL Gold and WIRED Platinum certified.
WHY THE RAISED FLOOR
Horizon 4.1 Milano involves the installation of approximately 16,000 square metres of Nesite raised flooring, consisting of C2C-certified calcium sulphate panels: a solution that combines maximum sustainability, stability and comfort underfoot.
One of the most complex aspects of the project, directly related to the structural choices of the building, is the installation of the flooring system on a wooden floor, a technical challenge that required a targeted approach, especially in terms of acoustic performance. In this regard, specific tests were conducted in collaboration with CMB, with the aim of guaranteeing maximum sound reduction and ensuring ideal acoustic comfort.
The modularity of the system also made it possible to overcome the technical challenges of installation, ensuring the flexibility of use and performance required by a building that symbolises innovation such as Horizon 4.1.

Products in this project
All Products
Panels
Calcium Sulphate
Nesite uses very high density calcium sulfate (1600 kg/m3). Calcium sulphate panels are available in different thickness options: PG1 - PG2 - PG3 - PG6
Structures
MPL
The structure with open cross-sectional stringers allows maximum stability of the floor even without gluing the columns to the supporting slab support.

LUNDBECK office expansion
The expansion of Lundbeck's production unit in Padua, a company operating in the pharmaceutical sector, is a project that stands out for its elegance and quality of systems. In fact, integrated solutions are spokesmen for a corporate philosophy that orbits around the concept of well-being, with active policies of social and environmental sustainability. THE PROJECT
Christchurch Civic Building (New Zeland)
Christchurch Civic Building has been defined the most eco-compatible building in New Zealand and it represents an important architectural renovation work designed by Athfield Architects. The building uses technologies dedicated to the optimization of resources such as the mini power plant that creates energy from landfill - collected material or the recovery of energy generated
Ligabue Group
The turnkey renovation of the new headquarters of the Ligabue Group included the construction of 1500 square meters of offices, a tailor-made project completed in just one month.
